Course Description

This seminar will examine recent developments in human computer interaction focusing on support for human exploration, comprehension, and manipulation of information through computer interfaces.
Topics will include:


We will begin by examining the role of communities, organizations, and institutions play in contextualizing information and information processing technology by reading John Selly Brown and Paul Duguid's book The Social Life of Information.

Additional readings will be selected from recent literature. Students will be required to read, present, and discuss research papers. Instead of reading a collection of independent papers, students will be required to study a coherent collection of papers from a research group. This approach provides some view the history and evolution of approaches. Students will be required to write a proposal for a novel research project.
