Specialty Concentration
The second stage of the seminar involves an in-depth
investigation of an area of research.
This work is to provide groundwork to assist you
in writing a proposal for a novel research
project during the third and last stage of the
seminar.
The specialty area should be a coherent field
of study examining a reasonably narrow cluster
of problems.
You goals during your investigation of a specialty
area are to:

Define the specialty area. Identify the basic
problems addressed and general approaches taken.

The key research contributions
You should produce a bibilography of
at least 5-10 important papers

The state of the art, central open problems,
and future research challenges

Examine, in technical depth, 2-3 research papers.

Assign one representative paper for the entire class
to read (at least one week before your presentation.)

Give a 20-25 minute presentation of the specialty
area.

Write a 5-8 page summary of the specialty area.
This work can be incorporated into the presentation of related
research in your final proposal.
Deadlines

October 4th - Submit a 1-2 page description of your specialty.

Briefly describe the problem area.

Explain why it is important.

Highlight the important issues and questions.

Describe your focus.
