Human Computer Interaction Research
Program Solicitation (with apologies to the NSF)
Deadline Dates:
Introduction
The Garage Science Foundation has been allocated approximately $3,000,000
in funds to support research in human computer interaction. The GSF is
soliciting a broad range of proposals to conduct research fundamental to
the design of systems that mediate between computers and humans. Proposals
should seek new ways of improving our ability to use computers, or to extend
the communities that use computers.
Human-Computer interaction covers support for human access, exploration, comprehension,
manipulation, and understanding of information through computer interfaces.
Examples of interface technologies include: visualization, graphical techniques,
language processing, computer perception, robotics as related to personal
interactions with computers, new sensors, new display methods, and multimedia
environments. The GSF urges proposers to consider developing new interface
modes and interaction methodologies that may move human-computer interfaces
to a higher level of use.
Eligibility
Eligible applicants include all students enrolled in 22c296.
Budgetary Information
Proposals budgets should not exceed $600K in total budget for a period
of 3 years in duration.
Program Review Information
A peer review will be conducted to evaluate proposal. Each reviewer will
be required to read and comment on three proposals.
The chief criteria will be:
What is the intellectual merit of the proposed activity?
How important is the proposed activity to advancing knowledge
and understanding within its own field or across different fields? To what
extent does the proposed activity suggest and explore creative and original
concepts. How well conceived and organized is the proposed activity? Is
the requested support appropriate?
What is the broader impact of the proposed activity on society?
How well does the activity advance discovery and understanding of human
computer interaction while promoting teaching, training, and learning?
Will the activity broaden the participation of underrepresented groups
(e.g., gender, age, ethnicity, disability, geographic, etc.)? What may
be the benefits of the proposed activity to society?
Proposal Format

Narrative (7-10 pages, 12 pt font, 1 inch margins)
The proposal narrative should include the following:

A statement of the objectives and scientific significance of the proposed
work;

A review of prior work in the area and description of it's relationship
to the proposed work (this can be based on the previously submitted review
of the specialty area).

A presentation of the research to be conducted and methods to be employed.
This should include a broad outline of the activities to be undertaken.

A statement of expected outcomes and benefits to be derived from the research.

Budget (1 page)
A budget detailing the resources required for the research including
an explicit justification of the major budget items. The budget should
include a detailed presentation of expected expenditures.

Budget Justification (1 page)
The budget justification should explain why the budgeted items are
needed to fulfill the needs of the proposal.
