Afternoon and evening of day 3 were spent working (afternoon: procedures/orientation
for interviews evening: meeting with Vietnames/U.S. officials).
We had a bit of an organized tour in the morning. Just a few pictures.

People having breakfast.

We waited in line with thousands of others to view preserved body of
Ho Chi Minh. Four statuesque soldiers stand in the big room with
glass-enclosed open casket, along with large Vietnamese flag and another
large red flag with yellow hammer and sickle. No cameras allowed
inside, no talking, no hands in pocket or behind back. Still
seems to be very strong national icon - bus tour guide, a young 20-something
man, said "We all love him." and so on.

Presidential Palace, though I'm not sure what that means. I think
they said Ho Chi Minh could have lived here if he'd wanted, but chose
instead the open, modest building below.

Where Ho Chi Minh lived for at least the last few years of
his life. Nice open design. Two small rooms upstairs.
Has an adjacent underground bomb shelter.

Another street scene.

At the Temple of Literature, about 1000 years old. 82 stone
stelae include the names and information about
of some kind of doctoral graduates from long ago.
Many poeple come here to gain wisdom by rubbing the heads of the stone
turtles that support the stelae. We were told that many university
students come here to rub the heads before important exams!

Blurry picture but included just so I remember another fabulous and
cheap lunch. $7 total for four people including drinks. Great
vegetable curry, tofu, and squid dishes, plus plate of various
spring rolls.
