UNIVERSITY RESPONSE
by
Willard L. Boyd
President of the University of Iowa
The University of Iowa is forever indebted to Gerry Weeg for his unique contributions to its advancement.
Without question, he has been one of the most significant figures in the life of the University and especially in the period since World War II. While Iowa did not generally expand programs in the 50's and 60's, it did embark into the new and exciting era of the computer. Through Gerry's leadership, Iowa has become a major contributor to computer science and to research and teaching usages of the computer. Through his effort we have a Computer Science Department, perhaps the only marked departure in new departmental subject matter since World War II. As Dean Spriestersbach has indicated, we now are involving each year more and more faculty members and students in using the computer for learning and research. Certainly Gerry's leadership in this major development of University programs has been exceptional.
I remember so many of the times we were together when he pressed steadfastly for better programs for students and faculty. I can remember when we were discussing the old Electrical Engineering Building and East Hall, and we had a short-range and a long-range space solution. There were times when I thought we would never solve the space problem (and we never will), but fortunately, the University Computer Center is now located in facilities worthy of the great program that Gerry built.
I can remember one evening in Old Capitol when Sprie, Gerry and I were arguing with our vendors about the cost of a computer. These have been exciting times for all of us, and Gerry has left an enduring mark on this University.
Gerry's great qualities of intellect, imagination, commitment, and compassion are the qualities which all of us seek. His friendliness and his enthusiasm made every meeting with him not just a discussion, but rather a totally wonderful experience.
He is very much in our thoughts and very much in our lives. This portrait of Gerry will continue to remind us of his contribution to Iowa. On behalf of the University, I am pleased to accept this portrait and to designate our Computer Center as the Gerard P. Weeg Computing Center.
