Informatics Cognate: Health Sciences
BA in Informatics
The informatics major with a health sciences cognate requires a total of 50 semester hours, 25 of them consisting of courses in Chemistry, Biological Sciences, Anatomy and Cell Biology, Psychology, Nursing, and Health and Sports Studies. It is intended for students interested in applications of computing to the health sciences. A major with this cognate may lead, for example, to careers in medical research or hospital settings, and, eventually, to professionally oriented graduate programs in public health such as UI's Master of Public Health degree. Alternatively, some graduates may opt to pursue graduate study in health or medical informatics.

Important note: at least two of the above cognate courses are normally open only to Health Promotion majors. Thus, at present, completing the exact cognate specified above might only be feasible to students double majoring in Health Promotion and Informatics. However, we expect to address this issue shortly and we encourage students interested in Informatics with a health sciences cognate to work with an Informatics faculty advisor to develop and get approval for a personalized health sciences cognate course set.
