Informatics Cognate: Art
BA in Informatics
An informatics major with an art cognate requires a total of 46 semester hours, 21 of them drawn largely from drawing, art history, photography, and design. These studies will teach students skills ranging from the design and maintenance of Web services, the applications of modern computerized artistic tools (e.g., Photoshop, Maya, Finale), the benefits and limitations of computers as a digital medium, and a deeper insight into the design of computerized tools guided by knowledge of an artist's requirements. A major with this cognate could lead to career paths including Web development, technology coordination for artistic productions, development of digital artistic tools, and artistic and/or technical development for entertainment companies.

Important note: several of the above cognate courses are currently open only to Art majors. Thus, at present, completing the exact art cognate specified above might only be feasible to students double majoring in Art and Informatics. However, we encourage non-Art majors interested in Informatics with an art cognate to work with an Informatics faculty advisor (who will work with the Art department) to develop and get approval for a personalized art cognate course set.
