Abstract
As the Internet has grown, myriad databases have been
brought online, providing massive amounts of data
through searchable query interfaces. While the
databases provide well-maintained structured data,
they offer little support for data retrieval tasks.
Traditional Boolean query models like SQL are based on
hard criteria (e.g., price < $100,000), while users
in data retrieval tasks commonly employ soft
criteria for their specific senses of relevance or
preference. Unlike traditional query models, which
generate exact matches, they expect ranked results
according to their soft preference or relevance. In
this talk, I will discuss challenges and approaches in
enabling soft queries on relational databases. I will
also explain the state-of-the-art and open problems in
this area.
