Earning a Minor in Computer Science

Effective Fall 2004

Minor Course Requirements

The minor in Computer Science requires a minimum of 18 s.h. of course work:

22C:016 Computer Science I:   Fundamentals 4 s.h.

22C:019 Discrete Structures

3 s.h.

22C:021 Computer Science II: Data Structures

4 s.h.

22C:022 Object-Oriented Software Development

4 s.h.
One Computer Science Elective 3 s.h.

Computer Science Electives
All computer science courses (except those numbered from 22C:001-22C:009 and 22C:100-22C:109) may be used as electives, including any course at the 100-level or above.  Courses at the 200-level or above may be used with instructor permission.  22C:005 may be counted as an elective only if taken BEFORE 22C:016 to avoid regression.  22C:109 Programming Languages and Tools may not be counted as electives.

New Minor Requirements
Effective Fall 2004

Effective Fall 2004 the requirements for the minor have changed.  Students may graduate under the old rules by petitioning the department.

Transfer Credit and Residence Requirement

At least 12 s.h. of the 18 s.h. must be taken at the University of Iowa.   A student may transfer a maximum of 6 s.h. for credit towards the minor.  Students excused from required minor courses may substitute other computer science electives.

GPA Requirement

No course accepted toward the minor may be taken pass/nonpass.  A student must have at least a 2.00 grade point average on all work attempted in the minor.

ECE Students

Students in Computer and Electrical Engineering who have completed 59:006, 57:017 and 55:033 will be considered to have satisfied the requirements for 22C:016 and 22C:022 and receive 8 s.h. of credit towards a CS minor. 

Applying for the Minor

You apply for a minor in Computer Science when you file an application for degree.  No other paperwork is required.
