Kalona: Located southeast of Iowa City on highway 1, it is the largest Amish settlement west of the Mississippi. Kalona was my home for 7 years. Don't forget to stop at the Kalona Cheese House on the way there.
The Amanas: The Amanas are my all time favorite place to visit. The Amanas were settled by Germans in 1855. The food is great, the people wonderful, the wine sweet and inexpensive (my favorites are dandelion, Lover's Blend and blueberry), and there are lots of festivals. I hear there is some excellent beer, too.
NOTE: The Amana people are not Amish, even though both groups are originally from Germany.
Cedar Rapids: I lived in Cedar Rapids (aka, CR) for a few years. I attended college at Kirkwood Community College and Coe College. Cedar Rapids sometimes smells...and not in a good way (think boiled breakfast ceral). I might go to Cedar Rapids two or three times a year if there is a store that I need to go to (that I can't find anywhere else) otherwise I stay away.
West Branch : Located east of Iowa City on Interstate 80, it is the birthplace of President Herbert Hoover. Keep a look out for Hooverfest. Hooverfest is in August and celebrates Hoover's birthday. The fireworks are brillant.
