TV Coverage During the Olympics

During the olympics, as part of the entertainment of various venues, the Spirit Band got lots of TV coverage. In fact, after the first 5 or 6 days, I stopped counting the number of TV spots I knew I was in, which was 7 at the time. However, I know that I was on national NBC coverage a few times, CNN Headline News, and some station in Mexico City, for example. In addition, as I was playing (particularly up on Park City Main Street), I had cameras shoved in my face from all sorts of countries. Who knows how many actually used their footage...

Probably the most exciting for me was when I met up with a couple reporters from my hometown NBC affiliate Kare 11. They were doing spots on various "Minneapolis Connections" at the Olympics. They filmed almost an entire set of our performance and generate about a minute spot which aired on the 10 o'clock news. Evidently, my parents were getting comments about the spot at work for weeks. In fact, about a week after the spot aired, I met up with a former highschool classmate while we were at the skeleton event, and she commented, "Hey Chris, I saw you on TV!" Let me tell you, my solo during that set was the toughest one during the entire two weeks... Luckily it turned out well enough (not my best, but at least a good performance). Pretty amazing, seeing as a year ago I would never have dreamt being a part of the Olympics, much less having my experiences shared with a good portion of the people I know back where I grew up.

Anyways, for those people who want to see this spot, my parents recorded it, and I digitized it at school. I editited it a bit, as my parents missed the first few seconds, and there were a few parts where I felt Kare 11 did a relatively poor editing job, so this video is probably 5-10 seconds shorter than the actual spot, but nothing substantial is missing (unless you count me moving my mouth with no sound for 2-3 seconds as "substantial"). I have the clip in 2 formats: Windows Media and Quicktime. I of coure have higher quality copies, but they are to large to store here. You can of course get them by e-mailing me.

In the future, I may be able to get a hold of videos from other appearances on TV, as I know other band members recorded some of them. If I get any additional footage, I'll post it here.

NOTE: I now have video and audio footage recorded by Alex Maier, the band videographer. I have put together a CD of music from the 132 piece band and a DVD containing footage from all 5 groups. If you want copies, you can e-mail me, or if you live in Utah, Carla Ray, the University of Utah band secretary may still have a few copies of the CD available.
